Kalmar Nyckel : Volunteers : Independent Study Crew Training Independent Study Crew Training
If you are an experienced square-rigged sailor looking to volunteer for several months, this program is for you! Our ship has a lot to offer the experienced sailor. You will have a complete understanding of tacking, wearing, setting, dousing, climbing, and will have the opportunity to work with our officers to learn more about a well-run ship and extensive volunteer program. Non-refundable Cost: The cost of the independent study class is $101, which includes your manual, training uniform tee-shirt, and initial drug test, plus an additional $17.92 for a background check which goes directly to the company. If you are currently on a random drug testing program and can provide proper paper work, your cost is only $60 + the background check of $17.92. We supply room and board in exchange for hard work. To apply: Fill out the independent study crew training application and return it to [email protected] or by mail to: Kalmar Nyckel Foundation; Attn: Capt. Sharon; 1124 E. 7th St.; Wilmington, DE 19801. Include your four- page volunteer application with your independent study application. We select trainees into this program at times when our sailing schedule allows for us to train new crew. Starting times are usually around mid-April, late June, or late August. After we review your application, we'll get back in touch with you to let you know if you have been accepted into the program. At that time, we'll agree on a start and end date, and start the non-refundable payment for the materials. We will also get your materials to you so you can start studying and get your initial drug test. The Kalmar Nyckel's independent study crew training program is a great training opportunity for a deck hand, who is working towards his/her first mates position in the industry, or for anyone who is interested in sailing on the most beautiful square-rigger in the fleet.
