Kalmar Nyckel : Volunteers : Help with ship maintenance

Help with ship maintenance

Refinishing blocks            Maintenance Lesson

Kalmar Nyckel  winters in Wilmington, DE, where the crew works to maintain the ship from early November through April.  We work seven days a week!  You are welcome to volunteer to help with ship's maintenance.  Experience is valued, but not required. There is a lot of scraping, sanding, and varnishing to be done before spring!

Getting started

Before your first volunteer day, please contact Captain Sharon Dounce via email [email protected]  to make arrangements for a staff member to meet you.  You will need to bring the four-page volunteer application with you on the first day.

Schedule

Each year, we have formal maintenance days on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am-5pm beginning on the second weekend in November through April.  After your introduction and first scheduled day of maintenance, you can pop in any time to help out on weekends or weekdays.

If you are interested in joining the sailing crew on the ship, please visit our Join the Sailing Crew page.  Sailing crew are required to complete 40 hours of maintenance time annually.  We welcome your involvement and look forward to working with you!

Did you know: That Kalmar Nyckel made four roundtrip crossings of the Atlantic between 1637 and 1645, more than any other vessel of its era?
