Kalmar Nyckel : Visit : Copeland Maritime Center

Copeland Maritime Center

Visit the Copeland Maritime Center (when we are open). Located on the Kalmar Nyckel shipyard campus, this beautiful riverfront center opened in 2015 to offer a year-round riverfront venue for experiential learning, educational field trips, team building as well as private rentals for business and social events. Exhibits include:

  • A 3/4-scale working model of the ship’s main deck where students of all ages learn to work a square-rigged sail
  • Watercraft of the World gallery featuring the extraordinary Forney Collection of 73 model ships and boats gathered from around the world
  • Science of Sailing exhibit introducing celestial navigation, dead reckoning, plus STEM concepts and metrics used in sailing and navigating on open water
  • Kalmar Nyckel: Key to the Kingdom offering a stunning photographic display of Kalmar, Sweden the namesake of the ship and the original Sister City of Wilmington.
  • Tall Ship Time Machine featuring a new 3-D animation exhibit that takes visitors on an imaginary trip back to 1638 to discover the differences between today's Kalmar Nykcel and the original ship, while revealing the inner workings, modern systems, people, and cargo that have changed since colonial times
  • Riverfront Room that chronicles Wilmington's industrial history as a leading center of both railcar manufacturing and shipbuilding
The Copeland Maritime Center offers self-guided tours to visitors during our regular hours.

Group tours are available upon request with advance notice and arrangements. Please contact us with your request at [email protected] or call 32.429.7447.
