Planned Giving
The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation’s 1638 Heritage Fund

The 1638 Heritage Fund has been established to give those who believe in the mission of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation a way to ensure its strength and vitality for the long-term. The 1638 Fund is made possible by individuals who share a desire to preserve our rich maritime and colonial history, and who care deeply about the embodiment of this tradition - our beloved ship Kalmar Nyckel and the Tatiana and Gerret Copeland Maritime Center.

Planned Giving Options

A planned gift enables you to make a contribution to the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation that has significant impact.

Bequests

The simplest approach is making a gift in your will, also called a “bequest.” Making a bequest is easy – you can designate a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, a fixed percentage of your entire estate, or leave your residuary estate after providing for your loved ones.

Sample Bequest Language (to be used in consultation with your attorney):

A gift to be used where the need is greatest:

“I give the sum of $_____ (or _____% of my estate) to the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, which has a federal tax identification number of 51-6015181 and a current address of 1124 East 7th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.”

A gift for a special purpose:

“I give the sum of $_____ (or _____% of my estate) to the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, which has a federal tax identification number of 51-6015181 and a current address of 1124 East 7th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801, for the following purpose:

If, as determined by the governing board of Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, it becomes impractical to use this gift to the specific purpose stated above, then the governing board may, in its discretion, change the purpose of the gift as needed while remaining as close as possible to my original intent for this gift.

IRA Charitable Rollover

If you are 70 ½ or older, the IRA Charitable Rollover allows you to transfer IRA assets of up to $100,000 to KNF and exclude the transfer from your taxable income.

Beneficiary Designations

You may name KNF as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or a retirement account.  You can designate a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the account, or make KNF a contingent beneficiary.

Charitable Gift Annuities and Remainder Trusts

These planned gifts allow you to contribute to the 1638 Heritage Fund now, while enjoying tax benefits and retaining an income stream for the rest of your life.

An estate planning attorney or financial advisor can advise you best on how to implement these giving approaches and what works optimally for your estate plan.

If you have already provided for the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation in your estate, please let us know. We encourage you to give us advance notice, so we can ensure that your wishes are recorded and followed exactly as intended and, if you wish, we may recognize you for your generosity.
